VELscope is a technology that uses special type of light that dentist to shine a patient’s mouth to detect any abnormalities. This new technology is effectively used to detect early forms of cancer or disease during an oral cancer screening.

The device is an adjunctive device, meaning it must be used together with and as a supplement to the traditional intra and extra oral head and neck exam. The exam can be performed in the dental clinics during a routine hygiene exam for about two minutes. Fast, easy and comfortable yet the results are very much accurate that traditional checkups.

It is the world’s most widely use adjunctive device for the visualization of:

  • Viral, fungal and bacterial infections
  • Inflammation from a variety of causes
  • Squamous papillomas
  • Salivary gland tumors
  • Cancer
  • Other oral mucosal conditions

New way of dental examination

The VELscope is a handheld device emits a harmless, bright blue light which is used to inspect the mouth and tongue. It is extremely sensitive to abnormal tissue changes and the distinctive blue spectrum light causes the soft tissue of the mouth to naturally fluoresce.

Here are some facts about VELscope

It is clinically proven

  1. Multiple clinical studies have presented or published at major academic meetings
  2. Indicated for ALL patients, including those at increased risks of oral cancer as per clearance given by FDA and approved by World Health Organization

Effectiveness and Convenience

  1. The VELscope system’s visualization is a significant advantage. Since clinical data studies shows and support the ability of the technology to detect lesions not visible or apparent to the naked eye.
  2. While darkened operation rooms are preferred for the system as well as for competing devices, light management is actually less of a concern with the VELscope system
  3. Portable unit can be moved between operation rooms
  4. No distasteful rinses required

As of today, 25 million VELscope examinations have been performed by over 12 thousand dental practitioners in 23 countries. The technology is backed up by more clinical studies than any other adjunctive device for tissue fluorescence visualization.
